Live Review of Drew Davidsen - SmoothJazzMag.com
Drew Davidsen Puts San Diego on the "Spin Cycle"! Leaving San Diego infused and wanting more, international recording artist, Drew Davidsen, demonstrates his ability to hold his place in the top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Smooth Jazz Charts this past Sunday night. Armed with his custom built Carvin Guitar, Drew takes the stage at the intimately charmed setting of Humphrey’s Back Stage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego, CA. Accompanying, Darryl Williams on bass, Billy Steinway on keys, and Moyes Lucas on drums (The West Coast family, as Davidsen refers). Davidsen and his West Coast family delivered a two set electric combination of purely creative soul jazz!... “Spin Cycle”, a savory mix of creatively fused sounds of pop, funk, blues, Latin and even disco, held for over 19 weeks on Billboard charts, peaking at #9 and hit #1 on Sirius XM and #1 on SmoothIndieStar.com.... Drew, keep on doin’ what you do! - PAt Cook

Live Review of Drew Davidsen - TheSmoothJazzRide.com
Renowned guitarist Drew Davidsen proved that his nomination as the American Smooth Jazz Award guitarist of the year was certainly no fluke. . . . with massive stage presence (even coming out into the audience to play behind his head, Hendrix-style), he came on in a blaze with “My Club Side” from his wellproduced Spin Cycle CD and “Bounce” from Around (Again), bringing the audience to the verge of frenzy more than once. He kept the flame alive, returning to Spin Cycle with the track “Don’t Delay,” before jumping into a scorching tonguein- cheek 12-bar blues number, based loosely on Hendrix’s classic “Red House,” with plenty of help from his saxman Dave Krug. Seeing and meeting Davidsen for the first time, I was immediately taken by his personable, down-to-earth nature. He mingled and chatted and performed as if we were all family. If you confined your focus to his playing, you would have been mesmerized by his handling of rock-like runs of the Hendrix era, blues runs of any era, and, of course, the effectiveness of his own material. Accompanying the guitarist was a very effective support squad which included Chris Rhodes (bass), Craig Alston (keys), Cory Baker (drums), and a very present Dave Krug on sax. Once the guitarist finished his set, there was a short break wherein all of the artists mingled and chatted with the ecstatic and appreciative audience.... an audience that vowed to return whenever these guys are willing to do the same. An excellent Friday night showing—and a full-throated testament that contemporary jazz has an extremely long way to go to get to any deathbed prepared for it by its critics. — Ronald Jackson

Live Review of Drew Davidsen - Catalina JazzTrax Festival
Drew Davidsen turned out to be one of the absolute best “finds” the JazzTrax Festival has landed in recent memory. ..Davidsen not only put forth an amazing live show, displaying a rabid guitar and pure enthusiasm, but he turned into the perfect lead-on for George Duke. Audience response was that it was a ‘perfect island match-up’ with hopefully much more to follow from drew Davidsen in future years. Drew showed he was not only good enough, but a sure bet for other festivals to follow in putting this young guitarist on stages across America. - Art Goode

Review of 'Spin Cycle" - Washington Post
When jazz guitarists cite George Benson as a prime influence, the question is, which Benson — the young sideman with an affinity for organ-powered combos and gritty blues grooves or the crowd-pleasing vet who helped define contemporary jazz with “Breezin’ ” and other chart-toppers a generation later? No doubt Drew Davidsen finds all aspects of Benson’s career inspiring. But as his new album, “Spin Cycle,” reminds us, the Baltimore-bred guitarist has a real knack for evoking the more tuneful, accessible and, yes, breezy side of Benson’s repertoire. Taking his cue from Benson and the late Wes Montgomery, Davidsen often favors gleaming tones and double stops. As a result, much of “Spin Cycle” sports a familiar but appealingly fluid sound, beginning with album’s title track. Combine that with the colorful assortment of R&B and pop beats that makes the album all the more radio-friendly, and it’s a safe bet Davidsen will continue to delight his smooth-jazz following. That he nimbly switch-hits on acoustic guitar (check out the sparkling ballad “Catalina Blue”) won’t hurt his chances, either. As for recalling the more soulful elements of Benson’s style, “Drew’s Blues” finds Davidsen and keyboardist-organist Eric Copeland fronting a quartet that sounds ready to play into the wee hours. — Mike Joyce

Review of 'Spin Cycle" - Smooth-Jazz.de
Towson, Maryland born Drew Davidsen was over 12 years lead guitarist of Baltimore's Richard Walton Group. After leaving the band he released his debut solo album This Journey (2007). On his sophomore album Around (Again) (2009) he followed his idol George Benson performing on his own Ibanez guitar. With his next album We 3 Stringz (2010) he featured smooth jazz stars like Chuck Loeb and Paul Jackson, Jr. Now is the time for Spin Cycle (2011). His latest three albums were produced by Creative Soul Jazz's Eric Copeland. Davidsen is joined on this album by Nashville Session Player Jazz Super Group called Player A, who recently released their album Our Own Devices (2011). The group consists of Eric Copeland, John Hammond, Gary Lunn, and Brian Fullen. Guest musician on this project is keyboardist Jay Rowe, known as member of Chieli Minucci's band Special EFX. Spin Cycle is not a boring wash machine's rotation but Drew Davidsen's innovative signature guitar performance. With his hooking guitar loops he shows the music world what's what. Don't Delay strikes with an appealing melody, a brilliant balance between rock and smooth jazz. Alexander's Dream offers an attractive West Coast groove featuring keyboard legend Jay Rowe. Global Sync showcases more of Drew's guitar fluidity, which makes his album so impressive. With the acoustic guitar piece Catalina Blue Drew plays his tribute to the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, which will take place in October again. My Club Side is a short glimpse into the disco scene. Cosmopolitan is Drew's reference to the great guitar master George Benson. With the uplifting On The Move he keeps the feel-good vibe going strong. Drew's Blues is what the title announced. Honest to the core. With the final My Father's World Drew gives the audience an emotional farewell. Drew Davidsen's Spin Cycle is a solid piece of guitar mastership offering a plethora of finest melodies. - Hans-Bernd Hulsmann

Review of 'Spin Cycle" - Amazon.com
Drew Davidsen is back in the smooth jazz scene with his new album "Spin Cycle." This talented guitarist releases his fourth album showing once more his exquisite style in which the mixture of jazz, pop, funk, rock and blues are the common denominator of his new material. Produced by gifted musician Eric Copeland and backed by a group of session musicians known as Player A from Creative Soul Jazz label also responsible for editing this new work, Drew Davidsen submerge us into a collage of styles. From the beginning, the title track, and throughout the whole album, Drew offers a solid work where technique and improvisation are combined smooth and naturally."Spin Cycle" is the single and certainly will not disappoint the listener. A well defined rhythmic base and a lively keyboard by Copeland, support Drew Davidsen who feels comfortable with both melody and solos. Other tracks that stand out are "Alexander's Dream" with the appearance of Special EFX's keyboardist Jay Rowe, the sophisticated "Cosmopolitan", "On The Move" reminiscent of his hit "Astro" a song that was in the smooh jazz charts top 20s for several weeks during 2009 and an impeccable blues ("Drew's Blues") which also displays a remarkable Hammond B3 by Eric Copeland who wrote the song. In short a waste-free work with the added value of engineer Bill Whittington a Grammy Award winner. Drew Davidsen again proves that not in vain he was nominated for "Best New Artist" by the American Smooth Jazz Awards last year. His virtuoso style begins to shine its own light within the smooth jazz firmament. 5.0 out of 5 stars. - Charlie Trece (Los Angeles) Published in Amazon.com

Review of 'Spin Cycle" - Smooth Views
I guess I’m drawn to music that makes me feel good, up lifts me, and allows me to escape from the day to day. It is one of the reasons I love smooth jazz so much, and really like the new release from guitarist Drew Davidsen. All the cuts here really make you feel good and are full of positive energy. The follow up release from his first disc is strong in material and is one that I think you are going to enjoy this spring. The title track kicks everything off. The back beat is solid and lays a great groundwork for Drew’s guitar. The chorus is bouncy and moves along at a great pace. You’ll be hearing a lot of this one this year. It is a good lead in for “Don’t Delay.” The guitar soars here along with a nice synth solo from Eric Copeland. The hook here is a little more evident than in the title track, and you’ll be singing along to it long after it’s over. “Alexander’s Dream” is dedicated to the memory of Drew’s brother who passed away in 1981. The approach here is a little more laid back than on the previous tracks and is highlighted by some inspiring keys by Jay Rowe. “Global Sync” is almost a play on words as the tune takes on a calypso type back beat that remains syncopated through the song. Some of Davidsen’s best guitar work can be heard here as well. It continues along at a good pace and finishes in a flurry. He takes a step back and shows his more acoustic side on “Catalina Blue.” This is a nice break from the more up tempo cuts and highlights his guitar ability. “My Club Side” is one of my favorites and gets things going quickly. Drew is out front through out and is driven by a nice back beat that will have your head bobbing or your feet tapping through out. “Cosmopolitan” slows it down a little bit again and has a real Wes Montgomery feel to it. It’s a real showcase for Davidsen’s guitar, and he shines well throughout. My favorite of the whole disc has to be “On The Move.” The drive, hook and instrumentation are brought together for a perfect mix that make you feel good. Be listening for this one real soon. He mixes it up again with the club feel, “Drew’s Blues.” Interesting that it was written by his keyboardist, but it captures the essence of the band and comes across as a real show stopper. The organ solo is a nice touch and is accented by the guitar of Davidsen. He finishes the project with the gospel favorite, “My Father’s World.” This one is almost all Drew, and reminds me of some of his work from his Christmas disc that was released last year. It is a nice way to finish this special release. Be sure to check this one out real soon. It has been one of my favorites of the new year, and one that I think you’ll like as well. I think Drew’s visit to the Nashville area (recorded just south of there) helped influence what he has to say here. Let’s give it another “spin” and hear it all again. – Harvey Cline

Review of 'Spin Cycle" - TheSmoothJazzRide.com
Without a doubt, “the journey” for guitarist Drew Davidsen from his native Maryland to the contemporary smoothness of his brand of jazz has been a most pleasant one, from the standpoint of this writer. I’ve written about Davidsen on a couple of other occasions, and my opinion is always the same. The guy not only plays with style and class, but he understands the nuances and sweetness of the type of melodies and hooks that reach people. His latest, Spin Cycle, is further proof of that. Stroking with certainty, purpose, and the assurance to his fans that he remains rooted in what makes Drew Davidsen’s music Drew Davidsen’s music, the treats continue here. Breaking out to state that clearly is the opening and title track, full of spark and high-stepping vigor, he dazzles throughout the album with technique, smart chords, and his impressive array of guitars, which happens to include one of my personal favorites, the Ibanez Artcore, all of which he works with masterful fluidity. Known to present me with a number of tracks from which to choose a fav, I am, as usual, hard pressed to do so. So many have their own magic and presence, be it a moderate, casually paced piece or an up-tempo shaker. The common denominators are crispness and memorable melodies. One track, “Alexander’s Dream,” has a distinctive quality that, if an old rocker lies back and closes his/her eyes, can take you back to the easy Southern blues/rock of The Allman Brothers Band back when Dickey Betts gave us “Blue Sky” and “Melissa.” Then, there’s the tender acoustic allure of “Catalina Blue,” which is simply peaceful and serene, while “My Club Side” carries a disco-like groove with it. To further demonstrate his affinity for the diverse, the adept guitarist then ushers in some reggae rhythm in “Global Sync” and “On the Move” is all high octane drive, complete with a nasty wah pedal for effect. He then grabs us with his hot, mid-tempo “Drew’s Blues.” The quiet, reflective “My Father’s World” closes it all out. Drew Davidsen’s journey seems to bring more and more pleasant adventures for him—and for contemporary jazz fans—with each new release. Spin Cycle is the next leg on that journey, surely to present a clean path for further success. – Ronald Jackson

Review of "Spin Cycle" - MWE3.com
If the mark of a great album is one that you can play and replay again and again, then the 2011 CD from guitarist Drew Davidsen, entitled Spin Cycle fits into that category. Featuring ten tracks of guitar-centric smooth jazz magic, Drew's latest CD is time well spent for jazz guitar fans. Although obviously a great choice for fans of jazz legends like Wes Montgomery as well as more relatively recent guitar icons like George Benson and Larry Carlton, there's also a neat fusion edge here and regarding some tracks on Spin Cycle, several music critics have even drawn comparisons to the instrumentals written by Dickey Betts for the Allman Brothers Band back in the early '70s. Of course, Spin Cycle is much more smooth jazz influenced and guitar based than that. Recorded and mixed in Franklin, Tennessee, the Spin Cycle CD features a number of great players backing up Drew-including John Hammond (drums) Gary Lunn (bass) and keyboardist Eric Copeland, while the magic studio touch of Bill Whittington puts the finishing touches on what's sure to be considered one of the top jazz guitar instrumental albums of 2011.

Review of "Spin Cycle" - Smoothjazz.com
Guitarist Drew Davidsen offers Smooth Jazz a much-needed facelift… with music that is filled with great ideas, killer melodies and exceptional craftsmanship. Fun, fresh, funky… SPIN CYCLE is the artist’s 4th release, recorded with Player A in Franklin TN, produced by Eric Copeland, featuring accomplished keyboardist Jay Rowe (Special Efx). This project is hot on the heels of Drew’s critically-acclaimed holiday release WE THREE STRINGS featuring Chuck Loeb and Paul Jackson, Jr. SPIN CYCLE can be gentle at times with tender tunes like “Alexander’s Dream,” “Catalina Blue,” and “My Father’s World,” but mostly it whirls, twirls and shakes with upbeat, original compositions and stunning guitar work! Fans of Ritenour, Benson and Acoustic Alchemy will dive into the spin with songs like the sophisticated “Cosmopolitan,” the driving “Don’t Delay,” and the fun title track. We expect big chart action and lots of sales on this one… Drew Davidsen is one of the hottest new forces in Smooth Jazz! - Sandy Shore

Review of "Spin Cycle" - Smoothjazz.eu
After his holiday album ‘We 3 Stringz’ at the end of last year, Drew tackles a new sparkling project. Drew recorded it in Franklin, Tennessee and it was mixed by Grammy Award winner Bill Whittington, and produced by Creative’s Soul Jazz’s Eric Copeland. Drew wrote all the songs, and they come out fresh, full of fun and groovy. The title track opens up with a smooth jazzy groove with hints of pop, funk, and rock. ‘Don’t Delay’ is a bit more relaxed, but as smooth as can be. It’s ideal for cruisin’ down the lane. With ‘Alexander’s Dream’ Drew slows down a bit more, but stays as melodic as ever. ‘Global Sync’ reminds me of Acoustic Alchemy, on a slightly reggae rhythm, with even some steel drums. Then we’re off to Catalina island with ‘Catalina Blue’ on the back of this lovely soft tune, while ‘My Club Side’ is a energetic sidestep into disco. ‘Cosmopolitan’ is not only a magazine, it’s the next track, freshly served with hints of pop, rock, and funk. ‘On The Move’ does exactly what is says, it moves with spinning energy and takes you on a lovely ride. Then Drew tacks on blues with ‘Drew’s Blues’, and although I’m not into that genre, this one’s a nice tune. ‘My Father’s World’ closes the album in a soft way. This is an intimate ballad, in contrast with the rest of the energetic, joyful CD. “Drew, man you outdid yourself! This is your best album up to now! What more can we expect from you? Keep smooth jazz alive!” - Patrick Van de Wiele

Review of 'We 3 Stringz" - TheSmoothJazzRide.com
It's that time of year when we witness a barrage of interpretations of some of our favorite Christmas tunes. Some are good; others are "ok "- to-fairly-unimaginative. Then, there are those that are so refreshing atypical that you find you may have to occasionally pause momentarily to identify a particular track, no matter how often you've heard it in the past. Such is the case on a few of the tracks on the very jazzy and vividly creative offering from guitarist Drew Davidsen as he gives us We 3 Stringz, a seasonal gift featuring such heavyweights as Chuck Loeb and Paul Jackson Jr. on the title track. Here are eleven tunes full of the Christmas spirit and loaded with enough jazz power to snap, crackle, and pop you through an evening in front of a cozy fireplace as winter does its thing outdoors or to groove you out as you chill on a sun- or moon-drenched beach, digging the upbeat drive of such pieces as "Joy to the World," Davidsen style (by the way, check out the funked-up bass offered by Gary Lunn). This project carries such true personality and character that Davidsen should have been permitted to copyright just those priceless intangibles if not the tunes. I admit to being weary and wary of the voluminous takes on the classic tunes and have tried to set my sights (and ears) on those that simply jump out and say "Here's what you seek!" We 3 Stringz is such an album, and I am pleased to have caught it this Christmas season in time to share its beauty and really cool innovativeness (not to mention demonstration of Davidsen's impressive skill - just check out this cat's flawless scale work and tight chords on "Christmas By the Cement Pond" for an example). This attractive CD, by the way, was recorded in Nashville, TN, on equipment that gives it such a "live" presence that you'll swear he's literally playing in your home or wherever you are. Davidsen loves the "old" way of recording (no programmed music; just a bunch of skilled musicians in a room together getting at it. I love it!). The album closes with a radio edit of the title track, a snappier version of the tune. All in all, a must-have Christmas treat and certainly a stocking stuffer for the true smooth jazz aficionado. – Ronald Jackson

Review of 'We 3 Stringz" - Cafe Jazz Radio
...the hip guitarist combines catchy grooves with the richness of the Christmas tradition on his latest entitled We 3 Stringz. Joined by a few friends, the project features the likes of Chuck Loeb and Paul Jackson, Jr. as well as contributions by some top notch Nashville cats! From among our favourites on the disc, we have God Rest Ye, Davidsen's swinging take on a Yuletide classic!" - Ted Hasiuk

Review of "We 3 Stringz" - Smoothjazz.com
WE 3 STRINGZ truly brings the heart of the holiday together with the creative joy that really outstanding musical performances can contribute to our lives. Drew Davidsen has selected some of his favorite hymns, and recorded them, as he puts it, “with my friends… live musicians in a room together.” The result is something he should be extremely proud of, it’s organic, compelling and uplifting jazz. Highlights for me include the title track featuring Drew together with compatriots Chuck Loeb and Paul Jackson Jr., and what I would have to say is the single best instrumental version of “Little Drummer Boy” I’ve ever heard! WE 3 STRINGZ is an absolute must-have for this holiday season. You will thank me for this recommendation! - SCOTT O'BRIEN

Review of "We 3 Stringz" - Smooth Jazz Therapy
2010 is proving to be quite a year for talented guitarist Drew Davidsen. Not only has his brand new CD ‘Around (Again)’ become one of the most talked about releases of the year but has also led to his nomination in the category ‘Best New Artist’ at the up coming American Smooth Jazz Awards that will take place in Chicago, IL on October 29. If that wasn’t enough Drew is now setting the backdrop for a wonderful holiday season with his Christmas CD ‘We 3 Stringz’. It features inspired renditions of timeless seasonal melodies and includes guest performances from fellow guitarists Chuck Loeb and Paul Jackson, Jr. plus a host of top notch Nashville session players.

Review of "We 3 Stringz" - Stubbys House of Christmas
Drew Davidsen is a Smooth Jazz guitarist, inspired by and in the tradition of George Benson. And, while far too much Smooth Jazz is stripped of all personality resulting in the blandest form of pablum, this cat can flat-out play. The arrangements, by and large, are fresh, Drew's guitar playing is fantastic, the production is top notch, and the surrounding musicians bring their best game. The title track is the clear standout and "Carol Of The Bells" swings mightily as well. Sure, the music here is smooth, but Drew never loses sight that it is first and foremost Jazz. In fact, it would be a tremendous mistake to dismiss this album as Smooth Jazz, given that the two tracks I've already mentioned, plus "God Rest Ye" swing about as hard as anything you'll hear on a Christmas record. You're going to want to pay attention to the rest of the album, as well; there's a lot more going on here then you might at first suspect. You should definitely be able to pick up on the George Benson influence, particularly on "We 3 Stringz", but you'll also catch echoes of Lee Ritenour and Pat Metheny as the album unfolds. Considering Drew didn't take up the guitar seriously until he was in his 20s, he's scary good. Can't overlook the supporting cast here either. Craig Nelson does some sublime things with the bass, and Pat Coil, frequently more restrained on his own albums, cuts loose with some crazy, wild, mad skills on the piano.

Review of " Around (Again)" - JazzTimes Magazine
Every year it gets increasingly difficult for new artists to break on through to the smooth-jazz charts, but Maryland-based electric guitarist Drew Davidsen has done it with the rollicking “Astro.” (Its title and inspiration come from Davidsen’s late father, who pioneered satellite technology for NASA.) Produced by keyboardist Eric Copeland for his Nashville-based Creative Soul Jazz label, the album also features Nashville session players and veteran smooth-jazz stalwarts like bassist Gerald Veasley and pianist Jay Rowe of Special EFX. Major keys and chords dominate on tracks like “Island Blues” and “Road Trip,” and Copeland’s vocals add texture to “Plus 12” and the ballad “Only 4 U.” It’s a respectable entry into the smooth-jazz-pop canon—think Larry Carlton or Lee Ritenour—and the best of the bunch here are the ballad “Friend,” where Davidsen conveys genuine emotion, and “Smile,” where his Metheny influences are successfully put to the test. - By Brian Soergel

Review of " Around (Again)" - JAZZIZ Magazine
Drew Davidsen’s chart topping “Astro” single is just one of a collection of tunes included on this exceptional testimony to Davidsen’s masterful composing and skillful command of the guitar. Talented session players, joined by guest artists including legendary bass player Gerald Veasley and dynamic keyboardist Jay Rowe, take you from compelling high energy tunes to laid-back easy grooves and around again, making this an album sure to find a home in your CD player.

Review of " Around (Again)" - Smoothjazz.com
Allow me to introduce you to the next big star of Smooth Jazz… Drew Davidsen, the multi-talented composer/guitarist whose impressive resume includes accolades from urban jazz to gospel, as well as being listed as one of the “Ten Hottest New Guitarists” in Guitar Player Magazine’s reader’s poll. AROUND (AGAIN) is high-caliber music, and puts Mr. Davidsen squarely in the company of talent like George Benson, Norman Brown, Ken Navarro, and Tim Bowman. “Astro,” the first radio single (written for his father, who pioneered satellite technology for NASA), leads the way, setting the pace for ten compelling and brilliantly performed songs on this, his second solo release. Drew’s high-profile guests on the date include bassist Gerald Veasley, sax man Dave Krug, and keyboardist Jay Rowe. Expect AROUND (AGAIN) to be around radio for a long time to come, since this CD is loaded with potential hits. Seriously good stuff from Drew Davidsen (again)! - SCOTT O'BRIEN

Review of " Around (Again)" - JazzWeekly
A fairly new kid on the smooth jazz block is guitarist Drew Davidsen, who’s won a bunch of awards for best new jazz artist, gospel artist and new guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine’s poll. He opened for George Duke at the 09 Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival as well. This disc includes Gerald Veasley lending his talent on the title track, and Special EFX’s keyboardist Jay Rowe joining in the fray. Davidsen’s got a nice clean tone, and handles these upbeat and up-tempo tunes like a campfire handles kindling. “Bounce” and “Astro” are radio friendly, but everything here is nice cruising music, sort of late period Wes Montgomery. You can tell he’s got the chops, but he keeps the reigns fairly tight, just loosening them at the right time. - George W. Harris

Review of " Around (Again)" - The Smooth Jazz Ride
If you’re good, if you’re effective, you can sometimes speak delicately and have the effect of thunder. In my humble opinion, this sophomore release by guitarist and native Marylander Drew Davidsen is cut from the fabric of some of the most melodic smooth jazz to date. From the opening note of the first track, Davidsen had to know he had something special here, something truly worth sharing. Full of flavor, memorable hooks, solid rhythms, and an unimposing sweetness in its approach, Around (Again) leaves such a pleasant imagery in your head long after the final chord of the final track.

I’ve always felt that the opening track of any good release should always be the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, a precursor to the vibes and grooves that will follow. Often, that holds true. At other times, it’s the only track that stays on track. Davidsen kept his eye on the ball and delivers solidly on all ten tracks here, including the very comely lead track, “Bounce” and the title track (featuring Gerald Veasley on bass, by the way) which immediately follows. Both tunes have the hooks and melodies that never seem to leave you. Then, there’s the drive and cool of “Going Coastal,” a tune that just mildly jams along with another of those cozy hooks. Before you can take a breather, he’s back with a jammin’ little number called “Astro” that’s equally full of body. The album had its hooks in me with the first four tunes—just like that.

It didn’t stop there, as “Island Blues” took me off to some funky little blues town (or maybe “island,” in this case) with which I am most familiar and am always seeking to revisit. This one comes with some nicely sassy sax from Dave Krug. “Road Trip” comes along next and simply keeps that funky groove going with a familiar tone, rhythm, and hook that smooth jazz has called home in some form or other since its beginning. Slowing it down to the soulfully rich and tender “Only 4 U,” the guitarist casts a bluesy shadow over the candlelight and calls to you to just sway and feel with him. “Plus 12” picks it up again with that bright and bouncy strut and some funky bass lines. On its heels, the bluesy and soulful “Friend” saunters in with a saucy, soothing touch. Davidsen finally closes this show with a light and airy mid-tempo ditty appropriately titled “Smile.”

I don’t know about you, my fellow jazzers, but this is how I want my smooth jazz. I don’t need a break or “fillers.” Also, it’s no real wonder as to why Davidsen was named as one of the Ten Hottest New Guitarists in Guitar Player magazine’s Readers Poll. His careful and
methodical, yet obviously soul-felt and often bluesy, handling of his Ibanez guitar throughout this production is far more than simply noteworthy. Here are chords and chord progressions that work, riffs that fit, music that says something. Around (Again) definitely speaks
loudly and clearly, even in the silky whispers it often delivers. Nothing here is too thick or too heavy and overwhelming. No beat is too frenetic; yet, Davidsen’s steady and smooth steering of this “vehicle” should leave you quite satisfied by the time you arrive at the end of the album. For sure, it’s a good thing that Drew Davidsen is Around (Again). - Ronald Jackson

Review of " Around (Again)" - Smooth Jazz Therapy
With his brand new CD ‘Around (Again)’ guitarist Drew Davidsen has really hit the ground running. Not only is it becoming one of the most talked about releases of the year but has also led to his nomination in the category ‘Best New Artist’ at the up coming American Smooth Jazz Awards that will take place in Michigan City, IN on October 29. With featured performances from bassist Gerald Veasley and Special EFX keyboard player Jay Rowe the album is already garnering considerable interest with both terrestrial and internet radio.

Despite the current buzz Davidsen is far from being an overnight sensation. He enjoys long standing status as a ‘go to’ session player and his first solo CD, ‘The Journey’, has been described as one of the most compelling urban jazz collections of recent years. However with ‘Around (Again)’ his time has really come and he gets things started with ‘Bounce’ which, despite a dreamily melodic introduction, quickly takes on the sort of edgy smooth jazz vibe that befits its title. The tune is currently being aired on Music Choice Cable television and another track grabbing media interest is ‘Astro’. Already in rotation at The Wave 94.7 in LA, this intense number finds Davidsen’s playing to be reminiscent of Nils at his very best.

The spicy yet controlled Latin flavour of ‘Island Blues’ is evocative of sandy beaches and blue oceans while ‘Going Coastal’ slips easily into a mid tempo groove and stays there. It’s a mood that fits Davidsen’s style to perfection and there is more of the delightful same with ‘Plus 12’ where a jazzy intent coupled with nice production touches simply adds to the pleasure. ‘Around Again’ shimmers with feel good energy and is enriched by great sax from Dave Krug while the swaggering attitude of ‘Round Trip’ says everything that needs to be said about top notch contemporary jazz.

A mellow disposition and some attractively subliminal backing vocals all combine to make ‘Only 4U’ a chilled out dream and although Davidsen keeps things turned down for the introspective yet melodic ‘Friend’ he closes out the album with ‘Smile’ that has the same warm glow as is evident throughout.

Whatever the outcome of the American Smooth Jazz Awards, there is little doubt that the name of Drew Davidsen is going to be around in smooth jazz for a considerable time to come.

Review of " Around (Again)" - The Urban Music Scene
The sure fire, guitar plucking efforts that surrounds the make-up for Jazz artist Drew Davidsen's recent disc, "Around (Again)" carries a significant value for some R&B music, while embraces a much softer, smoother pop sounding approach to various compositions that underlies the entire project. With a little spicier edge to a hip appealing sound on a couple of compositions, "Around (Again)" tackles every area of a 'watercolor' jazz music template. On any given plateau, or at any of the recent live performances he attended under his belt, Drew has something to offer here & is worthy of a listen

As soulful contemporary jazz can grab you, is as the intention opening track 'Bounce' enters the room. Smooth, gentle plucks of the guitar strings & a simple melody hook is all it took to sway this one. Smooth Jazz rhythmic & radio captioned 'Around (Again)' was too easy to giveaway. Very simple melodies was a little too predictable. 'Going Coastal' & 'Astro' kept with the same influence, while 'Island Blues' does take me out of that simplicity realm & finally into a more intriguing, creative modern blues feel. The guitar presence of Mr. Davidsen begins to stick out, especially around the 2:00 minute mark of the composition, as he spills a little solo scat midway into the track.

'Road Trip' balanced the CD with a mellow, mid-tempo flavor and 'Only 4 U' slows it down a littler bit more, orchestrating a soothing pace of background vocals, a slightly chilled romantic grooveline & a hooking catchy melody. 'Plus 12' kicks it up a notch & resorts to a peaking funky number. A free-flowing track with a nice groove & a backing bass guitar solo that is sure to garner attention. The opening conga snapping to 'Friend' cascades the composition easily into the hands of Drew's guitar skills. Finally 'Smile' left an impression Mr. Davidsen intended to decorate the listeners mind with - a journal of peaceful, thought provoking songs sealed with enough of Drew's musical tangibles to make you wonder about another pending project to come soon after this one.

"Around (Again)" was a step in the right direction for Mr. Davidsen, although I would highly recommend shaving some of the smooth jazz cream/formulas off a couple of tracks & allow for more freedom & creativity to channel through. "Around (Again)" contained a fair medium of enticing tracks, but after awhile, many of those 'too smooth - radio friendly' tracks burned out of interest. Drews' proficiency on the guitar may make up for the entire disc rotation. I hope next time when the opportunity is given, he would challenge those skills & take the production level up towards more adventurous, complex driven compositions designed to showcase his overall gift on the guitar. Terrill Hanna

Review of " Around (Again)" - Smooth-Jazz.de
Hailing from Towson, Maryland Drew Davidsen has showcased his guitar skills on more than 30 projects. He started his solo career with the album This Journey in 2007. A project dedicated to smooth jazz and his idols George Benson, Larry Carlton and Les Sabler.

His affinity for Ibanez guitars is clearly listenable on his sophomore album Around (Again) (2009). Produced by Eric Copeland for Creative Soul Jazz Drew's new album offers besides session players like Dan Needham (drums), Gary Lunn (bass), Tony Morra (drums), Dave Krug (sax) and John Hammond (drums) guest musicians like Gerald Veasley (bass) and Jay Rowe (piano). A great part of the album was performed by Eric Copeland (keys, vocals, programming).

With mellow tones introduces Drew into his new project. Guitar, keyboard and piano form on Bounce a perfect sound. Drew and Eric compete for the ultimate song. The title tune offers an uplifting twist featuring Dave Krug on sax. Baltimore resident Dave Krug who already supported Drew Davidsen on his debut album has played live and recorded with several groups and artists, all of which have influenced his musical preferences and style.

With Going Coastal Drew approaches the coastal line of smooth jazz. His sultry guitar style is the perfect medium for his song ideas. The song Astro is already a hot runner on many radio stations. You can buy the single at CDBaby since several weeks. The propelling rhythm and Drew's guitar performance will certainly enthuse the audience. The reggae influenced Island Blues conjures pictures of sun, water, beaches and the whole Caribbean flair. Smooth Jazz cruisers, you know what I mean. Drew is a musical painter as Road Trip reveals. Musicians are often on the road to reach their audience and so it's a natural process to become a vagabond in the best sense. Where can you get better impressions?

The romantic ballade Only 4 U is for honeymooners and all other lovers, a composition by Eric Copeland. Plus 12 shows more of Eric's intelligent arrangement and Drew's fantastic talent as composer and guitarist. An unbeatable duo. Superb Gary Lunn's bass solo adding the icing on the cake. Friend is Eric's precious gift to his friend Drew. A wonderful composition exclusively written for Drew's guitar and Drew perfectly stages the melody. All ends with a Smile. Drew's guitar chords flow nicely together. With his sophomore album Around (Again) Drew Davidsen killed two birds with one stone: he and his friends had great fun in recording this album and showered their audience with an awesome acoustical present. Review of "Around (Again)" - www.keysandchords.com
Instrumental smooth jazz from the USA. This is Drew's second solo album, on which he composed every song, except 'Only4 U' and 'Friend'. His instrumental sound is melodic, and the songs are quite catchy. The title track is up tempo, and very fitting for smooth jazz radio. But all the attention goes to the first single 'Astro', a high energy feel good song, which he wrote especially for his father, who worked on satellite technology at NASA. You can hear that track already on the radio. Drew got help from saxophonist Dave Krug, bass player Gerald Veasley, piano man Jay Rowe of the band Special EFX, and from keyboard player Eric Copeland, who produced the album as well. Other session players from Nashville helped too. There are no bad tracks here. I like 'Going Coastal', and 'Island Blues' is also beautiful. On 'Plus 12' you can hear Eric Copeland's voice, and 'Friend' is very quiet. Nice, original smooth jazz! Original review in Dutch on www.keysandchords.com - Patrick Van de Wiele

Review of "This Journey" - Jonathan Widran, Jazziz, All Music Guide
The title of Drew Davidsen's 2007 independently released solo debut This Journey has proven joyfully prophetic. Since releasing the fresh and dynamic, perfectly "in the pocket" set of 12 melodic and coolly grooving originals, the multi-talented composer/guitarist-a longtime session player who has appeared on close to 30 high profile projects--has enjoyed a unique career whirlwind, earning accolades across the board in the worlds of urban jazz and gospel and being named one of the "Ten Hottest New Guitarists" in Guitar Player Magazine's influential reader's poll. An institution at Delaware's Reheboth Beach Jazz Festival for the past eight years, Drew at the 2007 event was invited by jam session host Gerald Veasley to join a superstar contemporary jazz jam session featuring Eric Darius, Steve Oliver, Jason Miles, Bobby Lyle and Nick Colionne. In 2008, he won the Newsome Award for Best Gospel Jazz CD, was inducted into the Newsome Awards Hall of Fame and won the
Momentum Award for Jazz Artist of the Year by IndieHeaven. This year, he's been nominated for two Momentum Awards, "Jazz Instrumental Artist" and "Jazz Artist of the Year.

Fans of Colionne and superstar urban jazz guitarist Norman Brown's blend of high energy melodic funk, crisp electric improvisations and laid back sensual soul will find an immediate emotional connection as they take This Journey. Davidsen kicks off the set with the colorful mid-tempo seduction of "Take it To The Maxx," then doubles his axe with the sax for the similarly sensual vibe of "Full Circle." He follows the instantly hummable, soaring and anthemic title track with the bubbly grooves and crisp melody lines of "Flip Side" before going retro, rolling his sharp melody over thumping old school beats on "Straight Up." Switching over the acoustic, Davidsen waxes dreamy and eloquent on the appropriately titled "Nylon Rain," then keeps the chill mode going with the passionate sax-guitar melody line and provocative electronic atmospheres of "Introspective." Those atmospheres blend with elegant piano, punchy sax coloring and crisp, laid back guitar and hypnotic, shuffling beats on "The Long Way Home."

"2 After 12" is perhaps the hippest track on This Journey, a delightfully bouncy, electronica-infused retro soul and blues jam that seduces and hypnotizes at the same time. The guitarist taps into an Irish music and inspirational vibe on the lovely, swaying "Vision Quest (Be Thou My Vision)," which he follows by the easy simmering, blues-jazz meditation of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing"-which adds panache and soul to a standard whose legacy includes renowned versions by Sting, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Not to toot his own horn, but Davidsen gets the title right on the closing track "Amazing," an extraordinary, most rousing, danceable jazz-funk twist on "Amazing Grace" that makes you glad God found you all over again!

While currently enjoying a re-release of This Journey-which is not only worth a second look, but is truly one of the most compelling indie urban jazz discs of the past few years--Davidsen also just released online a few preview tracks for this next project: the high energy, feel good, top down, sun in your face travel tune "Astro" and the moody and contemplative, easy grooving, electronic-tinged "Bounce." For Davidsen, currently a resident of Towson, Maryland, the exciting journey continues!

Industry Quotes

"Drew Davidsen turned out to be one of the absolute best "finds" the JazzTrax Festival has landed in recent memory. I was especially on "the hunt" this year for young talent that few had seen and especially the West Coast had never seen. Never having seen or met Drew, I took a real chance in this booking and had no idea until the show began, how it would turn out. I knew he was good enough for the first third of the show, but the last two-thirds showed he was not only good enough, but a sure bet for other festivals to follow in putting this young guitarist on stages across America. He not only "put forth" an amazing live show, displaying a rabid guitar and pure enthusiasm, but he turned into the perfect lead on as new unbefore seen talent by many for the legendary evening follow through by the legendary George Duke. Drew himself couldn't believe he was leading off for George Duke. Audience response was that it was a 'perfect island match-up' with hopefully much more to follow from Drew Davidsen in future years." - Art Good, Producer, Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival

"Hi Drew, You were really AWESOME at the Catalina Island Jazztrax Festival on Sunday, 10/18/09. My husband and I talked with you Saturday evening when you walking down the sidewalk. Unbeknowst to me and my husband, we did not know we were talking to a new, upcoming jazz artist until we saw you perform that Sunday evening. You made me and my husband feel very special when came down and played your guitar in front of us - we were sitting at the end in the front row. My husband was the one that made the comment about the Baltimore Orioles when we met you and took pictures with you at the autograph section. We wish you all the best and looked forward to seeing again real soon!! Keep us posted when you come to the West Coast again!!"
